When I first started brainstorming for my zine, I wanted to choose a theme that would be both captivating and meaningful. Nursery rhymes came to mind because they are such a familiar part of childhood, yet many people don’t realize the depth and variety behind them. I was intrigued by how these simple, often playful verses could hold so much history and cultural significance. It struck me that nursery rhymes are not just childhood songs but also reflections of historical events, societal norms, and even superstitions. For instance, I learned that “Ring Around the Rosie” might be connected to the Black Plague, which sparked my curiosity about other rhymes with hidden histories. I wanted my zine to explore these fascinating stories and bring to light the origins and transformations of these classic verses. Another reason I chose nursery rhymes was their adaptability—how they’ve been reimagined in different cultures and modern contexts. By focusing on nursery rhymes, I could showcase their evolution from traditional tales to contemporary adaptations, showing viewers how these rhymes have remained relevant and vibrant over the years. This theme allows me to blend historical exploration with creative modern interpretations, making the zine both informative and engaging. Through this project, I hope to reveal the overlooked layers and meaning behind nursery rhymes and inspire readers to see them in a new light.
